Finding out how can be difficult if you don't spoil yourself. You can and should learn to avoid the punishment.

Yes, you can lose heroes, run out of gold, and get stuck in a ditch because of it, but there is also no game over and no limit to recruits or income generation, so you can take as long as necessary to overcome that and win. In Radiant or Darkest mode, you have all the time in the word to claw back from problems. If you don't take the time to do that? Well, chances are you'll hit a wall, get slapped around in fights, have a full graveyard, no gold, and assume it's just the game being overly harsh. If you are prepared to accept and learn from mistakes while you scale the knowledge curve, you'll do just fine by applying what you've learned. The key word is 'punishing' (at least later on in the game when investments have been made).

Its difficulty can actually be broken just by learning and applying a small bundle of information, but you'd be surprised how many people never pick up on it. An actual 'difficult' game generally remains so even when you know what to expect, whereas that isn't really the case with DD. But as I said, it rewards perseverance with success pretty fairly.ĭarkest Dungeon is less about a tangible 'difficulty' and more about knowledge. It has A LOT of difficulty relevant factors even on the easy difficulty, and if you do not understand the basics it can feel very punishing. I will say that this game isn't very kind to those seeking a casual gameplay experience. You can very easily lose to poor planning.

There is a lot of strategy and though that goes into planning your crawls, and even good plans can go sour if you have a few bad combats (I *almost* lost my main crusader to bad stress attacks yesterday, and today I almost lost my main flagellant to the same issue). The game also is not a direct or easy path to get from start to end, since you will be spending most of your time trying to save enough money with unnecessary dungeon crawls to afford the recovery of your main units and squad that you will want to use to beat the main questline. Each mission I do runs about 10-15 minutes, with longer missions adding about 5 minutes for each increase (so the Long missions are about 25 minutes, unless you get lucky on your dungeon layout). I can attest to that length seeming likely. I have no idea, but I have read several people say this game is roughly 100+ hours.
